Shadowing Oranges - Have you ever tried working with a color that was hard to know how to shadow it without creating "mud" or really muted shadows?

I just finished the above painting (this is only a portion of the full painting). "Coral Chorus Line" was one I had on watercolor paper for many years, but got busy and it sat in my flat file until recently when I pulled it back out and determined to actually paint it.

I have painted oranges in several paintings in the past, but I have never really worked with coral as the main color. I wanted to keep the coral as vibrant as I could, while shadowing it and getting the values as dark as they needed to go.

There are several things you can do when darkening any color and trying to keep it vibrant: first, try using a color in the same family like adding a darker green to the green you are using; second, try using an adjacent color family to darken that color (for example to darken orange I use reds, to darken greens I use blues, to darken reds I use purples, etc); finally, to get a color dark enough you may have to add a red-purple or a blue-purple depending on your base color. For more information, I have a blog post on my website that goes through creating vibrant colors at this link:
How to Mix Vibrant Colors in Watercolor.

I did some color charts prior to working on the painting (see video below) and decided that I was going to use my tube paints, Quinacridone Coral, Perinone Orange, and Permanent Orange by Daniel Smith for some of my main colors. I followed the the suggestions above to keep the colors vibrant and some of my mixes became the Quin. Coral with Perinone and Quin. Coral with Permanent Orange. However, I realized pretty quickly that I was not going to be able to get the color dark enough for the shadowed areas. In the end, I used my Carbizole Violet mixed with some Perinone or Quin. Lilac mixed with Perinone to create semi-vibrant darks. The shadow areas may not always appear vibrant and we don't always want them to be, but I would rather start with vibrant mixes and then neutralize them later. It is almost impossible to bring the vibrancy back in watercolor once it is gone.
